Choosing where to get pierced and by whom is definitely one of the most important decisions you'll make when deciding to get pierced. Take your time and choose wisely. After all, piercing is a semi-surgical process and you wouldn't let just anyone perform surgery on you, would you? Start by asking other people who are pierced who pierced them. Many studios have more than one piercer, so be certain to find out WHO and not just WHERE. You'll quickly find out that most people are more than willing to discuss this with you at some length and many will even carry cards from the shop where they got pierced. If you hear even one person with a negative experience at a studio, you should take that studio off of your consider list. Pay attention. You'll probably hear the same shop and person several times. Put the person / studio with the best reputation at the top of your list. The studio I use, in addition to having a stellar reputation, was recommended to me by the heavily pierced owner of a tattoo studio in direct competition with them. The piercer who was there, apparently, is the only person he will allow to pierce him. That kind of recommendation goes a long way. Visit the studio you're considering using and talk to the piercer. The shop should be clean and professional. Their piercing needles should be sterilized and single use. The piercer should wear gloves while performing piercings. Jewelry should be sterilized. The actual piercing room should remind you very much of a doctor's office or outpatient clinic in its basic setup, cleanliness and appearance. Ignore price. Typically, a more experienced piercer will charge more for his services than a novice. I have seen a tattoo / piercing studio with a sign in their window that stated that they would pierce anything for $35.00 including jewelry. Unfortunately, their reputation does not make me want to go there to be pierced.
